Birches thm

Birch trees originated from across the northern hemisphere and most prefer moist soils and a cooler climate, but will tolerate warm and dry conditions.

Birch trees produce a sap that is traditionally used for both a simple glue and as a sugar, not dissimilar to maple syrup.

A lesser-known birch species, River birch (Betula nigra), has a more papery trunk and is a rich chocolate colour. It will grow in warmer conditions than silver birch.
Groves of birch look stunning, and when combined with a simple metal edging and a minimal underplanting, the effect is classic.

It is a look I have helped many clients achieve.
